How to make a drone at home?

Dear readers,

As we all know the current industry is highly involving UAV/Drones so everyone is very much interested in it, but when it comes to affordability they are very costly and not commonly available.

But Wait, In this article I'm gonna guide you on how can you make a drone from scratch or simple we can say at a very low cost and no professional Experience is required to build. all you need is practice after building it in order to become an Experienced pilot that can be considered the most important part if you are having an indeed interest in UAV/ drones.

So let's begin

Things you need to build Your own Drone:

Note: These are the common parts that are common in every drone no matter which category it is.

1. Frame:

This is the first that you have to decide wisely according to your need, like if you build a Racing drone, load-lifting Drone. But if you're building the drone for the first time I'd suggest you Buy the F-450 frame. this is a quadcopter frame.

NOTE: You can choose any frame configuration like a high-speed racing drone or a hexacopter
but as a beginner, if you are building I'd suggest you build a quadcopter by using an F-450  from that is because it's commonly available online as well as offline if the electronics market for hobby purposes.

2. Motors:

This will be the propulsion system or we can say engine which makes your drone lift off the ground. For drones basically, we use 3 phase dc brushless motors as per the requirement.

NOTE: KV (Kilovolts) rating can be used to determine the RPM of any brushless motor!

  • LOW KV motors with more no. of windings for load lifting drone.
  • HIGH KV motors with less no. of winding for high-speed racing drones.

Suppose the KV rating of a motor is 1000kv and you've got a battery source of 11.1 volts, then the approx RPM of the motor will be (11.1*1000)=RPM of the motor without any load.

3. Propellers:

The propellers are the third most important part which will generate the thrust which is being powered by the motors and thus lift off the drone. this usually comes in the set of 4 pcs for quadcopters.

The important point to remember is the size of the propeller according to your motors KV rating.

  • For high-speed racing drones, small propellers will be recommended.
  • For load-lifting drones, big size propellers are recommended.

5. FC  (Flight controller)

It is considered to be the brain of the drone.

The FC is used to give commands to each motor individually to move in which direction and at what speed. By using several onboard sensors like accelerometer, gyro, barometer it calculates and makes the drone stable while flying in the air.
But wait the FC can't deliver enough power to run the 3Phase brushless motor even the FC sends the signal with single wires to each motor so, how it controls the motors? and the answer is with the help of ESC!

4. ESC (Electronic speed controller)
The powerline for the motors.

This is the control unit for each motor. if you've 4 motors then you'll need 4 ESC for each motor individually.

You can clearly get from its name, what is the main motive of ESC, that's to controls the speed of a motor according to the given signal by FC and deliver power as per the motor requirement that FC can't deliver.

This is the same as our brain gives a signal to our muscles and further, they perform the action, similarly, FC acting as the brain and ESC with motor performs the action according to te given signal.

6. Radio Controller
We've talked the major parts but there's question comes that you're not making a wired drone, what to do?

The  answer is to have a Radion controller that will send the signal wirelessly to your FC, that where you want  to fly your drone, it doesn't mean the drone would say you that he'll spy your girlfriend;), yes you can but :), but here, it means whether to move up/down, left/right, forward/backward, in terms of flying these term are known as:

-+ Roll  means to move left/right
-+ pitch means to move forward/backward
-+ Yaw means to move up/down

You can choose the radio controller according to the range of distance you want!

7. Battery

For drones, if we talk, then mostly LI-PO (lithium polymer) batteries are used Due to its high discharge rate that is reliable in order to run the drone smoothly otherwise you can use LI-ON (Lituim ION) as well but mostly it's not preferred.

For general drones, you should prefer 3S rated lipo batteries, where S denoted the number of cells it contains.

  • 1S=3.7v
  • 2S=7.4v   (3.7*2)
  • 3S=11.1v (3.7*3)
8. M&F XT60 connector with Switch

These are the standard connector mostly preferred for connecting the battery with the drone it comes in MALE / FEMALE set but it is preferred to use a prebuilt connector with an ON/OFF switch to turn the drone on/off.

9. Camera with MicroSD card
(Optional for remote monitoring purpose)
This is an optional feature that you can include in your drone to get visuals from the drone or record videos or have an FPV (first-person view) to have a feeling like you're inside the drone.

10. Gimbal
(Optional for the camera stability)

It's a device used to stabilize the camera to reduce blurriness and maintain the focus of the camera.
It is the same as the suspension of a car that reduces socks similarly gimbal reduces socks that can affect the camera visuals.

11. Transponder
(Optional for security in case lost or get out of range)
This is a safety device used to find the drone in case of lost situations. It continually transmits signals as it goes out the Radio controller range and automatically shuts down the drone.

You can use it if you want else it's not mandatory to have on your drone

Here's a youtube tutorial video below how you can add these all together and have a custom made drone:
