what is 5S? | 5S - What are The Five S's|Quick Training on 5S |

Hello Everyone, this article is all about the "5S".

NOTE: Read till the end to know everything about 5S!

What is 5S methodology?

The 5S methodology is a system for handling workplace organization. It includes 5 steps known as the 5 S's that turn organization into a step-by-step system for people to follow.

What is the purpose of 5S?

The purpose of 5S is to make a workplace function better by making it an easier place to work. This occurs by making spaces make sense; tools and materials are placed in logical locations based on who needs them, how frequently they're needed, etc. Spaces are cleaned regularly. Cleaning and organization become habits. When used correctly, 5S ultimately makes processes safer and more efficient.

What does 5S stand for?

  1. Seiri          -  Sort
  2. Seiton       -  Set in Order
  3. Seiso        -  Shine
  4. Seiketsu   -  Standardize
  5. Shitsuke   -  Sustain

Let's start the implementation of 5S :

Steps -

1. Sort / Seiri -

Sort the items on the basis of -
  • Keep
  • Remove
  • Move

2. Set in Order / Seiton -

As it is already cleared from the name, set the sorted items in the order.

Keep the items near which are used frequently to avoid over-motion. For example - Kitchen. The boxes of Sugar, Tea, and Spices are kept nearby.

3. Shine / Seiso -

The 3rd step of 5S is shine. Clean the Items, remove dust if any. Make a schedule to clean the items regularly

4. Standardize / Seiketsu -

"Standardize," is the fourth step in the 5S process. Begin to standardize 5S operations by making the process more than a word-of-mouth agreement. This is the time to implement a clear, universally understood system so that employees are certain about what they are expected to do. One excellent way to do this is to design and print out 5S audit check sheets that can be used by whoever is checking an area on a given day. A checklist that asks specific questions about the work area can help ensure that processes are carried out as intended.

5. Sustain / Shitsuke -

This is the most important step of 5S. Sustain the 5S that you have implemented. The most important factors that contribute to the lack of sustenance are -

  • Inadequate employee training - Train all of your employees for 5S methodology.
  • Lack of Time - Make a plan and define area wise responsibility to adhere to the 5S.
  • Lack of requested feedback - Employee feedback should be collected and responded to in a timely and genuine manner

I hope, Now you have an understanding of 5S. You can implement 5S in your School, College, Offices, Shop Floors, Shops and even at the home also.
